Hurghada was once just a tiny fishing village, and was not visited by anybody from outside of the local area. This was true as recently as the 1970s.

However, once tourists discovered the clear blue water and great opportunities for diving, Hurghada quickly grew into a major tourist destination. Today, the result is a stretch of 20 km with beach hotels.

Most of these hotels are laid out along one major road, and all a short transfer from the international airport, to which it’s easy to find cheap flights..

About the modern resortHurghada is a popular tourist resort for divers and for those who just enjoy getting out their snorkel and swimming close to shore. Egyptians, Saudi’s and Americans visit Hurghada alongside Europeans to sample the golden beaches and crystal clear waters of the Red Sea Riviera.

Hurghada is in reality three main centres and numerous self contained tourist areas now growing into one main body. To the north lies the place that is closest to being called a town, Al-Dahar, where more than half of the ‘locals’ live.
